In May 2001, the US Navy found 12 tons of cocaine in the hold of this ship, and the entire crew, including Russian sailors, were accused of drug smuggling. Zvezda Maru was detained on May 3, 2001 in international waters 500 miles from Acapulco (southern Mexico).

Georgian parliamentarians added powers to the president
On February 5, the Georgian parliament introduced amendments to the country's constitution that significantly expanded the powers of the head of state. The amendments were adopted by an absolute majority of votes - 167 deputies supported it, only 9 were against. According to the amendments, the institution of a cabinet of ministers is being introduced in Georgia, the post of prime minister is provided for, but the head of government is the president.
