In the United States, at the age of 95, George Mendonsa, the subject of Alfred Eisenstadt's photograph "The Kiss in Times Square", taken in August 1945 and which became one of the symbols of the end of World War II, died at the age of 95. The Times Square Kiss was taken on August 14, 1945, after US President Harry Truman announced Japan's impending surrender. The picture shows Mendonsa kissing Greta Friedman. She died in 2016 at the age of 92.
