Rescue units of the Navy, which were capable of performing work of such a level as the evacuation of Kursk crew members, have not existed in Russia for several years, the chief diving doctor of the Navy, Sergei Nikonov, said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper. “Previously, each of the fleets had its own full-time deep-sea divers. They were capable of performing a whole range of serious work to assist an emergency boat at depths of up to 160-200 meters.
