On July 3, 1981, The New York Times published a now-famous article entitled "Rare Cancer Found in 41 Gay Men." The article describes the sudden spread of a rare skin cancer called Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) among gay men in New York and Los Angeles. This cancer was previously known to primarily affect older people of Mediterranean and Jewish descent, who may have lived with the disease for many years. Now, on the contrary, it affected young, healthy men and was fatal.
