Archaeologist Mark Abbe, a teacher at the Faculty of Classical Arts at the University of Georgia, was amazed when in 2000, while working on excavations in the ancient Greek town on the territory of modern Turkey, he saw a statue with traces of paint. The remains of the red pigment on the lips, black on curls, gilded coating on the arms, legs and torso.
