Although the printing press was invented by Gutenberg, it was the father of the Reformation who made the book a mass and inexpensive commodity. How did books become what we know today thanks to a German theologian from provincial Germany? We are publishing a translation of an article by writer Richard Higgins for The Washington Post.

Can people's memories become our own? We are all direct descendants of generations that survived the great catastrophes of the 20th century: war, genocides, extreme forms of aggression and violence, the ruthlessness of political movements and regimes, coups d'etat and, of course, revolutions. The 100th anniversary of which we are celebrating on such a grand scale this year. These events happened before most of us were born.

Between “there” and “here”. A prosperous mother and wife of many children from the Swedish city of Malmo was found dead in the red light district of Copenhagen, connected to Malmo by the legendary Øresund Bridge, over seven kilometers long. In her hometown she was a respectable housewife, but when she moved to a neighboring one, she worked as a prostitute. Not at all out of need, but because of something more.

In November 1933, Osip Mandelstam wrote an anti-Stalin epigram “We live without feeling the country beneath us,” which he read to only about 15 acquaintances. Boris Pasternak would later call this act suicide. One of the listeners of the poem turned out to be an ordinary patriot, listened to Mandelstam and, of course, reported where he should go. And arrests, exile and death began in one of the transit camps. Until spring, Mandelstam’s body, along with the other deceased, lay unburied.

On November 2, the presentation of the first album in seven years by the Moscow avant-rock band Polite Refusal took place in Moscow. We explain why a concept record about war turned out to be a failure on all fronts. 15 years ago, in the Earth-Air program, “Polite Refusal” played the final, according to his own statement, concert on television.

In 1959, then-teacher Anthony Burgess fainted during class. Later, doctors discovered he had a brain tumor and assured him that he had no more than a year to live. Since then, he has published more than 50 books, and in the period from 1960 to 1964 alone, Burgess wrote as many as 11 novels. He made it a rule to write at least 2,000 words a day. The diagnosis was not confirmed, and Burgess died in 1993 from lung cancer. However, this story is far from the most painful thing in the writer’s life.

DEUS CONSERVAT OMNIA God saves everything Anyone who is at least a little familiar with St. Petersburg will realize that one of the best personalized museums in Russia is located there - the Anna Akhmatova Museum in the Fountain House. It is on its façade that this motto of the Sheremetyev family is placed, which accompanied Anna Andreevna throughout her terrible life.

— and a round table at the M.S. House-Museum. Shchepkina, November 10, 2017 I’ve been toying with the term “text for theater instead of a play” for a long time. Already Vitez’s formula “theater can be made from anything” seems to hint to us that a theatrical text is not at all the same as a play, moreover, any text, including dramatic text, is only material for processing, and not a priority world. But this gives rise to a logical question: how can playwrights write texts under these conditions?

From November 14 to 17, the DOM Cultural Center will host experimental music concerts. The late founder of the DOM Cultural Center, organizer of many unique events, Nikolai Dmitriev, had several projects starting with the letter “D”.

The “North Wind” carried Renata Litvinova for several hours from the noisy capital city to the glorious city of Krasnogorsk. And not even because it was cheaper, but because first of all it was interesting to see what happened to the performance in almost six months. And there are just a lot of discoveries. Firstly, the pre-premiere screenings were still nervous. Both for the performance team, theater workers, and for the audience.
