Eliezer Yudkowsky. Serious stories
The most interesting works of literature and art are full of suffering, conflict and tragedy - without these elements, stories would not be as exciting and “serious”. On the other hand, if it were a question of what kind of life we want to live, all other things being equal, we would not be attracted by the prospect of a life full of suffering. But if people could build an ideal world, would they decide to get rid of all types of suffering at once? If not, why not?
