Mortality among prisoners has increased in Russia
In Russia, the death rate among prisoners has increased, follows from the report of the Council of Europe. The increase was mainly due to a decline in the prison population, but it is still the largest in Europe. In 2019, 2,420 Russian prisoners died, and as of January 31, 2020, 519.6 thousand people were in prison, the CoE report says. A year earlier, there were 563.2 thousand people in Russian prisons, and in 2018, 2,331 prisoners died.
