Place on Instagram: Mirny, “the diamond capital of Russia”
A small town in Yakutia is often called the “diamond capital” thanks to one of the world’s largest diamond quarries, the Mir kimberlite pipe, to which the settlement owes its existence and name. Open-pit diamond mining there was stopped back in 2001, moving to an underground mine, so the perimeter is practically unguarded. The quarry, on the outskirts of which the city is located, is the main attraction of Mirny.
