The flashlights of the distant Gondwana
Natalia Reznik The New Light gave us many valuable plants of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), including potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes, tobacco, vegetable pepper and physalis. Unfortunately, the evolutionary history of this vast family is shrouded in fog. Most nights are grassy plants with delicate flowers and fruits that rarely turn into fossils. Only a few fossils of nightshade seeds, having an age of about 50 million years, have reached this day, most of the finds are significantly younger.
