“They will kill you, they will send others.” How conscripts are forced to sign contracts
Families are trying to get their sons back, but this is not always possible. In Russian military units, conscript soldiers are forced to sign contracts with the Ministry of Defense. These are no longer isolated cases: the problem has become systemic, signals are coming from all over the country, human rights activists say. They use persuasion, promises of good money, and if the “carrot” doesn’t work, they threaten to imprison you, send you to a “meat assault,” beat and mock you.
