Russian Sunday
Yesterday our athletes won four gold medals at the Games in Sydney “And I’m going to Russia, I want to go home...” Not only our athletes participating in the Sydney Olympics, but also journalists would probably subscribe to this phrase. The last Millennium Games until yesterday brought mostly disappointments to our team.

The Nazis came to school
Local Nazis carried out an exemplary foray last Friday in Ryazan. In the afternoon, a group of unknown people broke into a Jewish Sunday school and destroyed several classes. The thugs did not touch the students - children from 7 to 14 years old - and teachers, limiting themselves only to anti-Semitic cries. Apparently, this was enough for the raiders to openly declare themselves and thereby put the local authorities in a very difficult position.

Fun for nothing
Prokofiev's "Duena" was greeted with homeric laughter at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater “Duenna” (“Betrothal in a Monastery”), one of Prokofiev’s most cheerful operas, despite its undeniable merits, is not particularly popular among directors. After the first production at the Mariinsky Theater (then the Kirov Theater, in 1946), it was occasionally shown in many major theaters in the country, but has not yet become a hit.

The Last Continent of Treasures
In the far corner, a pile of gold coins and stacks of bars glowed dimly. These were Flint's treasures... How many human lives, how much suffering and blood did it cost to collect these riches! How many glorious ships were sunk, how many brave people were tortured, who were forced to walk blindfolded on a plank thrown over the side! What gunfire, how much lies and cruelty! Robert Louis Stevenson.

Oil in exchange for loans
New IMF program for Russia Russia should not count on IMF loans this year or next if oil prices remain high enough. “The strong balance of payments suggests that we may refuse to take out a new loan this year - this is the general opinion.

Who will go to "financial intelligence"?
At the end of this week, at a meeting with First Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Kudrin, a new version of the draft law “On combating the legalization (laundering) of illegally obtained income” should be approved. But it is unlikely that the document will be submitted to the government as planned in early October, since a serious interdepartmental struggle has unfolded around it.

Here he is rolling
The corridors of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs can be a dangerous place for uninformed visitors. Minister Igor Ivanov is going to ride a scooter along them, testing out a gift from US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Mrs. Albright took advantage of Igor Ivanov's stay in New York at the UN General Assembly to present him with a scooter and a helmet that was fashionable in the States for his 55th birthday.

Spartak takes the lead
After the 25th round, Spartak Moscow became the sole leader of the Russian football championship. And the capital's Lokomotiv, which was on a par with the Red-Whites in terms of lost points, lost to their fellow countrymen from Torpedo - 0:3 (two goals scored by Gashkin). The result is all the more surprising considering that the Torpedo team is going through hard times and this is their first victory in the last two months.

For Don Pedro!
Fourth Continent Male Solo The wet brunette replaced the blue-eyed blond in the creamy dreams of saleswomen of commercial stalls, triumphantly completing the decisive set in the formation of a generalized sex symbol of the twentieth century. 10 years earlier, the Hollywood dream factory had finally appreciated the luscious appeal of Latin lovers and, with a royal gesture, moved Antonio Banderas from the janitor's room to the front of the stage.

Steel carving
The latest statements by Russia's top military leadership about the upcoming reduction of the armed forces by more than a third make us remember the consequences of similar actions in the past. Even a relatively small reduction in the army after the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 (from 1.1 million to 760 thousand) forced the government to think about employing former officers.
