“Friendship of Peoples” (No. 7) publishes Vasil Bykov’s story “Swamp”. The writer is recognizable from the first lines: “Having got out of the gloomy forest wilds, where they wandered half the night, Gusakov sighed with relief: the forest ended, a field spread out in front of them.” The relief is deceptive: three (at first anonymous “they”, gradually acquiring surnames, ranks, titles, characters, pasts, turning into living people as the narrative progresses) were in the wrong place.
