India begins parliamentary elections
In India, the largest democracy on earth, early four-phase parliamentary elections began yesterday. There are 670 million voters in India. Yesterday, 150 million of them in 14 states and two union territories elected 142 out of 543 deputies. The next rounds of elections will take place on April 26, May 5 and May 10. The ruling Hindu party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is considered the favorite.
