A radioactive fragment of a common past
20 years ago, on the night of April 26, 1986, the fourth power unit exploded at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In addition to the nearby regions of Ukraine and Belarus, some Russian regions were exposed to radioactive contamination. According to the chief state sanitary doctor of the Russian Federation, Gennady Onishchenko, today there are 4,343 settlements in 14 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, where more than 1.5 million people live, in the zone of radioactive contamination.
