Cold memory of a hot past
Arriving on an excursion to Buchenwald, I first of all began to look for the famous inscription “To each his own.” I imagined a typical arched gate in front of the entrance, with a clock above which, like a horseshoe, Goethe’s saying would be inscribed in the correct Gothic font. I found it, but not in a visible place, as I had imagined, but at the exit, and not on the outer, but on the inner side of the grate, only at eye height - a small cast phrase.
