Revenge or reconciliation?
The time boundaries of a civil war are almost always arbitrary. If only because no one, as a rule, declares it, no one signs capitulation. The fighting ends, but the bitterness remains, sometimes for many decades. In this situation, the winners usually choose one of two paths - revenge or reconciliation. The Bolsheviks took the first path, but the USA and Spain preferred the second. The American Civil War broke out in 1861 after eleven southern slave states seceded to form a confederacy.
