Women 2000. The highest indicator of the power and influence of the international female movement for me, as probably, for many who were five years ago in Beijing, was precisely the World Beijing Conference. During the session, I took part in the work of several specialized sections - in privatization in countries with a transition economy, for women's rights. When representatives of our region are reported, it becomes very sad, almost everywhere women lost their former positions.

What are the main successes? Difficulties?

In New York, our country was represented by more than two dozen members of the official delegation and activists of women's public organizations. The discussion left few indifferent. Galina Karelova, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Development, head of the Russian official delegation. The impressions are very bright. It can be seen that all women still perceive a lot at the emotional level. The condition has changed qualitatively with the solution of the female issue.

Five years ago, official delegations and non -governmental organizations gathered in Beijing to restore justice and protect women's rights. To show the world that when women suffer from injustice, we all suffer; that when women gain strength, it becomes better for everyone.

The changes that followed the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe demonstrated that the word “democracy” has a completely different meaning for men and women. The structural adaptation of the region to Western countries and the process of transition to a market economy took the role of “losers” to women. Women were invited to sacrifice many rights that they could count on and which they could actually realize under the communist regime.
