In the 1960s, the intelligence services of five English-speaking NATO countries launched a joint project to intercept satellite communications. The network of listening stations, dubbed ECHELON, would span the globe over the next three decades, becoming the focus of not only numerous conspiracy theories but also a European Parliament investigation that suspected the allies of industrial espionage.
