In Russia, almost every week the Ministry of Justice declares completely different people to be “foreign agents”: politicians, journalists, writers, musicians, historians and activists. The status of a “foreign agent” in Russia is a “civil execution” and a constant threat of criminal proceedings. In this way, the state makes it clear that it is against any attempt at foreign influence in politics and, more broadly, in culture. But is culture, and indeed politics, possible in isolation?
