On September 30, 1917, Yuri Lyubimov was born in Yaroslavl. Theater reformer. Artistic director of the Taganka Theater.
Oh, how lucky you were to be born -
Almost simultaneously with the country!
You lived with her everything that happened to her.
Say thank you for being alive
(Vysotsky to Yuri Lyubimov)
From 1922 he lived in Moscow. One of my first memories was seeing Lenin in the coffin. The merchant father, who had become “dispossessed,” scolded him: why go to the funeral of an “evil and nasty journalist”?
So that his father's status would not spoil the future, he worked from the age of 14.
In 1939 he graduated from Shchukinskoe. During the war he was the leading artist of the NKVD song and dance ensemble and performed at the front.
Since 1946 - at the Vakhtangov Theater. He taught at Shchuka. In 1963, with students, he staged the play “The Good Man from Szechwan” based on Brecht. Made a splash. The production opened the new season of the Taganka Theater, where he became artistic director in 1964:
The condition of the theater was terrible. The public did not go to the performances at all. I set a condition: I close the old repertoire and open a new one
Demidova, Zolotukhin, Vysotsky, Smekhov, Filatov came to Taganka for Lyubimov. The red square became the emblem. At the entrance hung a portrait of Brecht, the author of the idea of “epic theater”, destroying the “wall” between the spectator and the stage.
Taganka has become the most avant-garde theater in the country. No curtain, almost no scenery, with pantomime, shadow theater, music. They played classics and modern times - “The Dawns Here Are Quiet”, “The Master and Margarita”, “House on the Embankment”. “Hamlet” with Vysotsky won the Grand Prix at a festival in Yugoslavia in 1976. A ticket to Taganka was a symbol of prestige.
The authorities attacked - “why Shakespeare?”, “why in Pasternak’s translation?” After Vysotsky's death, several performances were banned. Lyubimov went abroad. In 1984, he was deprived of Soviet citizenship.
So the twenty-year struggle with the stunned Soviet government ended.
Worked in Israel, USA, Europe. It was a success. Soviet citizenship, along with the name on posters, was returned in 1989.
The Taganka Theater was divided. Despite the scandals, Lyubimov remained in the profession - in the 2000s, critics wrote about a renaissance in his work.
Left in 2014, at 97.
