В Госдуму внесен законопроект, регулирующий деятельность СМИ — иностранных агентов. Авторами документа значатся депутаты Петр Толстой и Леонид Левин, а также сенаторы Андрей Клишас и Людмила Бокова. Согласно законопроекту, иностранные СМИ будут обязаны в течение месяца со дня признания иноагентами учреждать российское юридическое лицо для возможности распространения своих материалов.

Трое из семерых арестованных по делу о подготовке теракта в Казанском соборе Санкт-Петербурга не признали своей вины, а также пожаловались на пытки при задержании, сообщает «Новая газета» со ссылкой на их адвокатов. Russia’s Federal Security Service and Interior Ministry will get access to citizens’ biometric data stored on remote identification systems operated by credit organizations, according to the second reading of new legislation adopted by the State Duma on December 15. The law would require remote-identification system operators to provide access to citizens’ biometric data “to authorized government agencies.” Individual consent would not be needed.

Former oil tycoon, now a political oppositionist in exile, Mikhail Khodorkovsky has sent an open letter to the head of Russia’s Central Election Commission, asking the agency to assert its independence from the Kremlin by refusing to register Vladimir Putin’s candidacy “for a fifth term.” In the letter, Khodorkovsky argues that Putin has spent 17 years in power, saying that Dmitry Medvedev’s presidency between 2008 and 2012 was actually Putin’s third term.

Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky is promoting his latest idea to shake up the country’s cinemas: ban movie theaters from devoting more than 35 percent of their screenings to one film. Medinsky says he believes the “current model” has lead to “monopoly” and “decay” that limits audiences’ options. Medinsky blames Western distributors for contractually forcing Russian cinemas to devote 50-60 percent of screenings to certain movies.
