There’s a cat three blocks down from the hotel I am staying in. A regular, rather corpulent and beautiful tomcat sitting on a porch of a grocery store, basking in the last autumn sunlight. There’s a cat plate with cat chow in it next to him. People feed him. People are good and kind. The picture is pretty idyllic and complete but one thing: the cat is totally blind. His eyes are all milky at the bottom and he startles and pokes his nose awkwardly in my cold hands every time I stroke him.
