"I stood aboard a swinging ship, which could well pour."
Interview with Mikhail Gorbachev by The New Times on June 23, 2008 Photo: Roman Goncharov NT: *Mikhail Sergeyevich, you compare the XIX party conference with the ship in the raging sea. Really rocked like that? * Another how. The threat was such that it would flood through the stern, the wave would make everything to hell. After all, they moved steps ... My God, not with steps - steps.

Four blues, two epitaphs, one recitative and other poems by Auden
Blues (Dedicated to Hadley Anderson) Ladies and gentlemen gathered here, To be sad, to think, to drink and eat, To breathe and warm the chair with your body, Who is sitting next to you? Maybe it's Death. Majestic blonde with sky blue eyes, In the subway or on the beach, Death awaits you; Married or single, young or old, You will be an obedient boy and do as you say. Death is a harsh judge.

Person by nature is free
How Ella Pamfilova from a convinced supporter of liberalism turned into a defender of the system In the 1990s, Ella Pamfilova was perhaps the most noticeable woman in Russian politics-she worked in the liberal government of Gaidar, criticized Yeltsin for the war in Chechnya, and created her own party. In the 2000s, Pamfilova became the main state human rights activist in the new vertical of power.

Translations from Houseman's A Shropshire Lad, Part 3
Twelve months already I met Fred There were fights and quarrels, Alas, I lost. In the fields that summer, so sweet, Until the first wet days, Rose Garland went for a walk With the one who is dearer to her. With the one who is nicer, even now, At least she’s not Fred, - Alive is ten times better The one who no longer exists. Fred moved to a new house That house in the ground is open; Rose and I are going for a walk, And Fred sleeps motionless.

Translations from Houseman's "A Shropshire Lad"
Alfred Evdard Houseman (1859–1936), who became famous in his native Great Britain for his collection “A Shropshire Lad,” is far from the most famous poet in Russia. It was translated, but little and, unfortunately, not always convincingly. This is understandable. It is almost impossible to fit into the incredibly capacious iambic pentameter, tetrameter, and sometimes even iambic trimeter the entire set of images, allusions, toponyms and other “translation difficulties” in the Russian language.

"If a consequence of politics is a war, then Down with such a policy!"
Mikhail Gorbachev appeal to world leaders Photo: Reuters Only two months have passed since the beginning of 2020, and the world has already ended up on the verge of a clash with the participation of the great powers. These were real military operations - in Iran, Iraq, Syria. Then the participants seemed to change their minds, moved away from the edge ... What is it? This is the old policy of "Balancing on the verge of war." Dangerous, adventurous policy.
