“They boil water in a samovar, they love tea, they write science fiction.” Who studies Russian in America and why?
material: Roman Lanin illustrations: Sofia Khananashvili Sometimes you just need to take a look at yourself from the outside, especially in times like ours. Therefore, we asked a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin who teaches Russian to Americans to tell us what those with whom Russian propaganda constantly contrasts us think about Russian speakers/Russians.

I actually always dreamed of becoming a footballer. So, for many years I played football at various sports schools. But it didn’t happen. I felt depressed because of this for some time — I just didn’t know what I wanted to do. However, one very bad football commentator pulled me out of my depression. It’s a shame I don’t remember his name, but I would gladly thank him for the fact that, because of him, I discovered journalism. I was 17 years old.

"Archive of the Rotenbergs"
The “Rotenberg Archive” is a leak of more than 50,000 files, including almost 30,000 emails and about 12,000 documents that shed light on how famous Russian oligarchs brothers Arkady and Boris Rotenbergs hid their companies, real estate, yachts and planes behind the backs of frontmen, which helped them bypass Western sanctions. A source, who asked for anonymity for security reasons, conveyed this archive to “important stories”.

Petersburg, I don’t want to die anymore - I have k v, a r t i r, a m, a sh i n a, and I also have a bed from Ikea and a toilet seat with four modes. get rid of me, Petersburg, don't chase me. I stopped talking a long time ago: “...the distraught Peter, sitting on the horse’s rack, rot rises above the swamp..." the sovereign's abyss and the imperial swamp. Samarkand darkness. Petersburg, civil grief is incomprehensible to me - run over these fagots with tanks.

from here I'll fuck with you, even though you can't hear me: the trees are covered with leaves, in winter they are like stones. I look out the window, studying cloud architecture. what is the autumn tram and the conifers of the local shores? What is sadder than mooing? ships going to sea? Rhyme despair or diligence - what will change? pour out whether melancholy or joy - everything is one. everything dies in the snowy blue. how everything beautiful is deserted, like these waves on the Neva.

“everything in life forms a circle” (Moscow, coins). Petersburg is straightforward and cigarettes. along the Promyshlennaya walk I am empty of water. fisherman on Molvinsky pond sits with milk. sit, fisherman, catch leaves, get drunk slowly. tell the winds about life. be present, be present. I'm tired of expressing something, looking for peace. why did you stop so early? garden over the river? Why didn’t he disappear, why didn’t he go out? Am I the ice of April?

I once studied in ped and lived in an ancient town. everything was there: love to death, kir 24 hours a day in the kiosk. the neighbors didn't fucking piss them off, at least as it is now. my friend, how young we were, oh how we believed in beer. Now we don’t trust any drivers, neither the Psalter nor the ribbon. I want to write poetry in pairs, those that I won’t say anything about. There's not a soul here, it's all gadgets, shawarma, chicken, baklava.
