Change is inevitable
The wars in Ukraine and Israel and the failing global economy herald the advent of a new world order Demonstrators in Moscow mark the fifth anniversary of the murder of opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, 29 February 2020. Photo: Yuri Kochetkov / EPA-EFE Boris Kagarlitsky Russian sociologist currently serving a five-year prison sentence for “justifying terrorism” Despite some obvious differences, it appears to me that there are certain similarities between current events in Russia and Israel.

There will be no New Year in Dagestan
Photo: ITAR-TASS Many Dagestan children are not expecting Santa Claus this year—more than a thousand schools in the region will not celebrate the New Year. Islamic activists are campaigning against the holiday, and official clergy believe it is not the most important issue for Muslims.

Stop the lawlessness of the Ministry of Education!
Education reform has reached Moscow schools . They are starting to be dumped. The principle is simple: the best schools, especially specialized ones, are taken, the lagging ones are added to them, and this is done in such a way that in the process the pedagogical work is completely disorganized. No one knows how to connect special schools with regular ones, especially against the background of budget cuts and radical redrawing of standards, and no one is interested in this.

If there is a fountain in the city, occupy it!
Having written an article about the detention of Udaltsov, I discovered that I was mistaken. I argued that Kaliningrad is not in danger, because there is not a single decent fountain in the city center. And immediately received a response from the homeland of Immanuel Kant. An indignant resident of this glorious Baltic city informed me that the situation with fountains there has changed radically over the past few years: several were built at once, one of them on the site of the Lenin monument.

Freedom of the scientific press
In the world of science, academic journals have ruled the roost for decades. Citation indices and the number of publications serve as key indicators of the significance of a work, and its appearance on the cover of a prestigious publication is no less important for a scientist than for an artist - a photograph on the front pages of a glossy press. Only with the development of the Internet the situation gradually began to change.

First drafts of an industrial strategy
The young author of Rabkor, Ivan Shchegolev, wrote an article about the defense industry that provokes interesting thoughts. The fact that this sector remains one of the hotbeds of industrial growth and remains competitive in the world market is, of course, well known. But what are the prospects and tasks for its further development? How can (and can) it become a driving force for other industries?

Protest without Udaltsov
On the morning of September 8, Sergei Udaltsov, opening the Forum of Left Forces, welcomed its participants as his comrades-in-arms and like-minded people, promising them that the triumph of socialism would inevitably follow if the liberal opposition overthrew the hated Putin.

"The Cretins of Amiens"
I learned about the unrest in Amiens from a Moscow colleague. He was very worried and asked if I was okay. “This is our main news,” he explained with some offense when I expressed bewilderment. In France, the same events were considered regional news, but even in nearby Lille, no one was particularly worried. True, at the city station the national police replaced the municipalities. The difference is immediately visible, even before you see the stripes.

Pyrrhic victory
The WTO accession agreement has been officially ratified . Formally, the discussion is over. And we will sum up the results meaningfully in about eight months, when everything becomes obvious. It will be especially interesting to admire those economists and publicists who promised us a sharp drop in prices after joining the WTO. Alas, the same thing is repeated over and over again. Criticism of the reforms is rejected as unfounded, ignored, and ridiculed.

Federation Council in a strategic position
Just a week ago it seemed like there was nothing more to talk about. The government decided to join the World Trade Organization, and even the fact that this decision took not only the population, but also most of the domestic business by surprise, should not have affected the further course of events.

Anatomy of the Eurocrisis
The European project of the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries has undergone considerable changes over the course of its not so long history, and the integration that is failing today has nothing to do with the promises of General de Gaulle or with the hopes that accompanied this process in 1970 -s years.

What will happen if all the oppositionists and corrupt officials are imprisoned?
Photo: Sergey Vasiliev/Kommersant The degree of disunity and social hatred that can be observed today in “prosperous” Belarus is reaching alarming proportions. Usually, the “integral” Belarusian society breaks up into different social clusters even faster than the Russian one. And even within these clusters there is no mutual understanding between people. Sometimes in Minsk it seems that some strange “war of all against all” is going on.
