Lukashenko pardoned another 20 political prisoners convicted of “extremist” cases

Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree pardoning another 20 people convicted of “crimes of an extremist nature.” Information about this is posted on Lukashenko’s official website.

Among those pardoned are 11 women, 14 people with chronic diseases, 10 parents, while one of the women is raising four children. The report says that all those convicted applied for clemency and expressed repentance.

The names of the released political prisoners are not disclosed in the publication.

Since the summer of 2024, this is the seventh case of pardoning citizens convicted in politically motivated cases.

At the same time, as Zerkalo notes , political trials continue in the country, and new convicts are regularly sent to correctional institutions.

This was previously confirmed in a conversation with The Insider by opposition representative, deputy head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus Pavel Latushko. According to him, news of pardons creates the appearance of liberalization, but in reality repression has intensified.
