The publishing house "Higher School" published a book by Mikhail Epstein
Postmodernism in Russian literature (2nd, expanded and revised edition). This is a philosophical and aesthetic study of Russian postmodernity, its origins and main stages of development in the 20th century, as well as its cultural and historical differences from Western postmodernity. The relationship of postmodernism with modernism, communism, and existentialism is considered. The main literary and theoretical programs of postmodernism are comprehended in the works of its prominent representatives (A. Sinyavsky, I. Kabakov, Ven. Erofeev, A. Genis, T. Kibirov...) and individual movements (metarealism, conceptualism, social art, avant-garde, rearguard , a new sentimentality...). For the table of contents of the book, see the end of the issue. The book can be purchased at the House of Books on Novy Arbat, Pedagogical Book, Mag. "Young Guard", at the House of Books in St. Petersburg, as well as on the Internet.
In the online magazine "Topos" - April publication:
Culture is an escape... Conversation between Marusya Klimova and Mikhail Epstein (in 4 parts)
Dear friends! In connection with the fifth anniversary of the “Gift of Words” mailing list, we are summing up preliminary results. How widely did “free” words spread (more than 1,300 of them were published)? Which of them turned out to be the most popular? What is the communicative potential of a particular word? The best way to answer these questions is to turn to the largest repository of the Russian language, the Russian-language Internet, using the statistics provided by search engines (Yandex, Google, Rambler...)
In the previous issue, the first seven most common words of “Dara” were presented: sovok (sovki), eroticon, metarealism, osEtit, loving, real, network. In this issue we present another seven in order of decreasing frequency of word use, which is determined by Yandex . Each word is given with a reference to the corresponding issue of "The Gift" or to another source, accompanied by a definition and examples, as well as dates of first use and publication (sometimes these vary greatly, especially in Soviet times).
The second part of this issue publishes an essay by the famous poet and word-maker Gregory Mark.
VIDEOLOGY 22685 word usages
1987 For the first time in the essay "Videocracy", broadcast on Radio Liberty (from New York) in September 1992. Published in Nezavisimaya Gazeta, 1992, November 27, p. 8.
Nowadays, the word “videology” is widely used in the names of video art exhibitions and festivals, network sites and video games, etc.
VIDEOLOGY - the ideology of the video era; a set of visual means of influencing public consciousness; processing of minds through the visual range: advertising, cinema, television, video, fine arts, electronic communications.
Videoology is the ideology of the video era. The highest value is not power, but fame, entertainment, visibility, obviousness. Videology is a set of tactics and strategies aimed at propagating one’s images and imprints in people’s minds. Instead of ideology - videology : not the dictatorship of a class, but the dictatorship of a cassette.Videology is the consciousness of an entire era, which has become contemplation, gazing. Information networks entangle the world more densely than administrative ones. Ideology divided: good and bad, foreign and our own, useful and harmful. Videoology divides: spectacular and non-spectacular, bright and dim, famous and unknown, i.e. based on aesthetic rather than ethical categories. If ideology sets up for or against certain phenomena, operates in a two-digit evaluation system (plus and minus, white and black), then videology creates multi-colored images that act deeper, like irritants of brain cells, causing an imitative reaction in the recipient of the video impact. Ideology is a fallen science, with its divisions, dichotomies, opposites; videology is a fallen art with its holistic, figurative and emotional impact. Ideology tries to influence through consciousness, videology - through the subconscious. Ideology appeals to the desired future, videology turns it into an illusion of the present. Ideology requires actions, videology encourages contemplation. The destroyed totalitarian ideology is being replaced not by some other, more attractive and powerful ideology, but by videology : the kingdom of visual images sliding across the retina of the eye, instead of the kingdom of abstract ideas clogging brain cells.
yar 4091 word usage
For the first time June 4, 2000, "The Gift of the Word", vol. 8.
Published: Epstein suggests “playing up.” The guest of our club is a famous philologist. "Komsomolskaya Pravda", May 31, 2001.
yar - male nature, productive force; reproductive member; the masculine principle of the universe; a strong, loving man.
The word " yar " in the meaning of "male dignity" correlates with the entire complex of Slavic mythological and poetic ideas about Yaril, about the spring rites of fertility - yareniya. In this meaning, the word “ yar ” comes from the Indo-European root “jar” (year, spring) and has nothing in common with “yar” - the name of a ravine, cliff, borrowed from the Turkic languages.
[In V. Dahl, the word “ yar ” is given in the meaning of “the very heat, fire, ardor, heat,” for example: “When the village was burning, there was such a fury in the street that it was impossible to approach.”]
“Go plow the land with your yar , and don’t disturb my girls,” shouted Kuzma, seeing that Vovka was again wandering around his house, looking out for someone.“What a rage you have,” the friends of his bathing leisure admired. “What a loving machine. How many people do you rage a day?”
Help came on time. The blow hit the very top of the head. The rapist jerked, leaned back and froze. At his ravine the last drop of the cup of life he had drunk to the end still glistened.
“And here is Yar Ivanovich to us, in person,” cooed Lyudmila. “The long-awaited guest has finally appeared. Why is he so boring with us? Now we will cheer him up.”
“A good, cool word “ yar ”,” Anikin admired, leafing through the ancient book. “And the heat in it sounds, and the gift, and the blow. In every sense, it suits the instrument of our passions: firstly, it is bright, filled with color, stands out against the background bodies like “spring-red” - against the backdrop of winter; secondly, it rages, rages, like nature in spring; thirdly, it is furious, fierce against all obstacles and terrible in anger..."
communicate 2261 usages
For the first time: "The Gift of Speech", vol. May 29, 14, 2001
communicate (whom) (without the particle “sya” is used as a transitive verb) - to guide and support the communication process, to involve people in communication and conversation.
Tolstoy's Anna Pavlovna Sherer is a master at communicating with socialites, spinning a thread of conversation out of thin air.Well, okay, let’s collect a pine tree from the forest, unfamiliar people will come together - and who will communicate with them?
Where did the hostess go? It's time to communicate with the guests, otherwise they are depressed
What a pity that Tolstoy and Dostoevsky never met. But there was at least one person who could talk to them about topics that would be interesting for posterity - Strakhov.Well, beeches! They sit in different corners, as if they had never seen each other... We need to talk to them.
one-word - 1962 word usages
For the first time - The Gift of the Word, issue 1, 17.4.2000. Published in the article " The Word as a Work. On the One-Word Genre ." "New World", 2000, 9.
one-word is the shortest genre of literature,
the art of one word containing a new one
idea or picture. In this case, the word appears as
a whole work that has its own theme, idea, image of the author and
overlap with other texts. If the genre of aphorism corresponds
sentence as a linguistic unit, then the one-word genre corresponds
the minimum unit of language - the word (lexeme). One-word as an author's
the work differs from neologism as an element of linguistic vocabulary,
having functional-applied, technical, terminological
meaning. The word appears as a completed work, as an independent result of word creation. I emphasize: the word is not a unit of language and a subject of linguistics, but rather as a literary genre, which has its own artistic plasticity, idea, image, game, and sometimes conflict and plot.
The king of Russian one-word words is Velimir Khlebnikov, who composed about 14 thousand new words. And in English literature, the unsurpassed masters of one-word words were Lewis Carroll and James Joyce.
Intelnet 1905 usages
The word "intelnet" in the English-language network - 82,600 occurrences (Google)
For the first time on June 1, 1995 on the English-language Intelnet website.
Russian version - since December 1997
inteLnet ( inteLnet , short for intellectual network; the letter "L" in the middle is capitalized, as a distinct insignia from the "Internet") - an intercultural and interdisciplinary community for the creation and dissemination of new ideas and intellectual movements through electronic space.
IntelLnet is the oldest intellectual project (since June 1995) and the first interactive device in the field of exchange and registration of humanitarian ideas on the English-language Internet (award from the London Institute of Social Invention for 1995).
IntelLnet is an attempt to fill the technical capabilities of the Network with intellectual content, to integrate the movement of signals with the movement of thought, so that the speed of electronic impulses multiplies conceptual moves and associative connections. Here it is appropriate to remember that the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom Athena was also the goddess of spinning art, and the Web, to some extent, is the work of her hands.
IntelLnet is an intellectual replica of the Internet , its reduced and in-depth likeness. The speed of electronic communications, borrowed from human thought, must return to thought, from the technical sphere to the humanitarian sphere. IntelLnet arose as an electronic development of the Bank of New Ideas at the Moscow interdisciplinary association “Image and Thought” (since 1986). At first, it was an interactive program for admission, registration, and public discussion of humanities ideas that went beyond a particular specialty. Subsequently, the IntelNet included projects such as the Book of Books: A Dictionary of Alternative Thinking ; The gift of words. Projective Dictionary of the Russian Language; Fan of futures. Techno-humanitarian bulletin , etc. In the electronic space, a point has arisen for receiving and distributing new ideas - terms, concepts, theories that can grow the generation of new consciousnesses.
Bring up 1903 uses
For the first time - "Russian Journal", December 2, 2002. "The Gift of Words", 55 issue.
to temporize (transitive verb; cf. to burden, to inseminate) - to expose to the action of time, to make something temporary, to introduce into the course of time; approach something from the point of view of a specific time and its values, historicize.
Stop talking about timeless classics. If you're making a movie based on Chekhov,
it means you are ready to make it up to date .
For some reason, all attempts to modernize religion, to let it catch up with progress, history, etc., end in mass disbelief. Many figures tried to modernize Russia by the standards of the New Age, to push it into European history; but she stubbornly pushed away and wanted only one thing: to stretch out. Establishing such a power is like using one river to irrigate a plain the size of an ocean.
setelase 915 usages
For the first time in the online magazine Grani.ru June 15, 2001. “The Gift of Words,” vol. 33.
SetelAz is someone who loves difficult and dangerous routes on the Internet, goes to secret sites, and is willing to do all sorts of risky tricks.
A networker is not yet a hacker, but a network adventurer, a seeker of adventure and thrills. The network vehicle moves along the network at an even pace, as if on flat terrain, and there are also desperate conquerors of network peaks - network climbers .
There are many teenagers among networkers . After all, they need to establish themselves on something, to challenge the city and the world. So they climb up and down the net, swinging upside down - that’s how fearless I am.
Gregory Mark (Boston)
These are notes from a layman. A layman who accidentally found himself 5 years ago near the place where the Gifts of the Word had just begun to make their way to the light.
I stood then with a pile of my one-word words collected in the Explanatory Dictionary , and a dozen poems written “in my own words” of the Dictionary, and looked, spellbound, at these newborn sprouts. Now the sprouts have turned into a living, rustling “word forest” of huge gift trees, lovingly grown and seeded by M. Epstein (ME). Grown in just five years from roots that had rotted for centuries in the soil of the tongue. And now - thanks to his painstaking work - they are swelling with new shades and meanings. (It’s nice to know that there is also a tree from my Dictionary there. The soil around it is loosened and carefully treated with ME. Maybe at least one of its transplanted branches will survive?) Some kind of completely different (philological?) compass is needed in this forest don't get lost. Among all these uprootings, among the trunks densely intertwined with branches.
The tree shoots are growing wildly. The buds of new, still very green sound-concepts are blossoming on the branches. They cover each other with their crowns, fighting for a place in the sun. Here, more often, the laws are different and the grammar is different. Word-trees bend with their crowns not only in gender and number, but also in relation to the body, soul and spirit, like loving , love and love . And you can already see the roaring herds of new animals: wild poetry, imposing stories, elegant short stories, monologues , root words , all these yars and yomas , bumping into trunks, eating leaves...
Thousands of living pagans - those by whom language alone lives - come here through the World Wide Web every week. Wander in the forest, think about the Gifts, taste and taste a new word. Exchange it over the Internet with someone on the other side of the Earth.
Not far from the lush young forest there is another grove. Alexander Isaevich Solzhenitsyn collects and revives withered seedlings, dead Dalevian words. It seems like there are fewer people here.
And then all around is the dark, balding forest of the Soviet language. Roots, snags, stumps, pieces of rusted metal... And between them are powerful centuries-old trunks that survived seventy years of logging. The impudent Fenya, conceived and born in the camps, rushes out of the rotten soil with poisonous, colorless burdocks. It sucks out the juices... A knowledgeable person will find the remote tracts of Mayakovsky, Khlebnikov, Bely, where life still glimmers, where sprouts, half suffocated by time, are spreading along the ground...
And even further - already beyond hearing, beyond the last horizon of hearing - the main ancestral words, underground rivers of prosody... Beyond the distance, Dal.
It's hard to get rid of this forest metaphor when you think about The Gifts. About the new life that is born there, right before your eyes. But the Gifts themselves are only a part and continuation of much more. Books of Books . What a gigantic and somehow very frightening swing!

Mikhail Epstein's network project "The Gift of Words" has been published since April 17, 2000. Every week, several new words are sent to subscribers, with definitions and examples of use. These words are not in any dictionary, and yet they denote significant phenomena and concepts for which there has not yet been a place in the language and public consciousness. “The Gift of Words” also conducts discussions and competitions for the best one-word sentences, discusses letters and suggestions from readers. “The Gift of Speech” can serve as a guide to word creation, an introduction to the world of linguistic fantasies and mental technologies.
