333 people - that’s how many literary, cultural and other artistic figures I mentioned in 28 columns published on Fridays from April to December in the newspaper VremyaMN. All this together made up a project with the natural name “ Russian Literature in 2000 ,” which from today is open in its entirety on the Internet. The list of three hundred and thirty-four is here . For me, when preparing the online version of the project, it turned out to be the most interesting. Firstly, of course, I was surprised by the number of people who became “Russian literature in 2000” for me and my poor readers. Frankly, I didn’t think I knew so many names (I know more!).

Secondly, the personal composition of the list is surprising (yes, I’ll say right away that you should read Adelaide about other important lists of the end of the year - once and twice - and I will limit myself to my own, without getting involved in the troublesome and hasty New Year’s discussions, only calling in my hearts - comradely Adelaide is a fool for her nasty review of “ The Smell of Chess ” by A. Friedlyand). To begin with, many of the names (at least a dozen!) are unfamiliar to me. Only by opening the corresponding note (and the numbers after the names, as you understand, are the numbers of the notes: don’t think it’s too much trouble, look through the table of contents, because it was not physically possible to put links - about a thousand - to each number), I could identify this or that name of the river. Hitler surprised me, as has already been said, and Stalin, who was mentioned twice, surprised me - despite the fact that Lenin never appeared. But for some unknown reason, Poor Demyan and Gennady Zyuganov appeared. Bitov complained (or admired) in “Close Retro” how arbitrarily the sequential text chooses its realities. But a set of critical texts - there is, in addition to the chronicle, also a projection of the brain (the content of the brain, mentality, system of preferences and just a face - a term from the story "More Ben", which received the "Debut" ), so that, along with arbitrary realities that mice- albinos slip into your discourse from the pages of newspapers, such a list reveals more: the basis. Leaders of Russian literature 2000, read by me.

This is the champion of the Russian Federation B. Akunin, mentioned in 12 columns out of 28 (yes, here’s another thing: it was not the number of mentions that was counted, but the number of texts in which the surname appeared; in addition, surnames from titles like “Ivan Limbach” or “Chekhov’s Library” were not counted "), Sorokin - in 10, Pelevin - in 9, Bolmat - in 6. Tolstaya, Levkin, Pepperstein and Prigov are mentioned 5 times each. Among the writers of the older generation, the names of Pushkin and Dostoevsky were especially actively mentioned - 5 times each.

These “results of the year,” I repeat, appeared on their own: in the course of a sequential letter (only I inserted Solzhenitsyn at the last moment on purpose, “twisted” him by one - now you’ll see how - otherwise it was inconvenient not to mention even once during the whole year the most bearded of Russian Nobelists). And in the last text of the cycle, which will be published in the newspaper tomorrow, I summed up these same results of my own free will - in 22 nominations. The column will have to be quoted in full: I hope that the festive mood of the editorial staff of RZh and VremyaMN, as well as common sense (the results are the results) will save me from anger for the fact that the same material appeared in two resources. So:

Star of the Year . Boris Akunin. He published the novels "Coronation" (almost the best in the Fandorin series) and "Altyn-tolobas" (the first novel in the "Adventures of the Master" series, selling in crazy numbers), "Tales for Idiots" (two editions) and the play "The Seagull" (in " New World" and twice a separate volume), signed a lucrative contract for the film adaptation of "Azazel", received offers from theaters and the "Brothers Karamazov" award, opened a website and spoke at a government meeting, and Prime Minister Kasyanov introduced the speaker to the audience not as Grigory Shalvovich Chkhartishvili, but just like Boris Akunin.
Novel of the Year . Sergey Bolmat. "On their own." Opening of the publishing house "Ad Marginem" - a Cologne St. Petersburger who writes spicy psychedelic prose with a good aroma of Nabokov and Tarantino. A reckless, virtuoso book that stays on the very edge of parody, like an action hero on the roof of a skyscraper.
Story of the Year . Vladimir Sorokin. "Nastya" (a fragment of the book "Feast" see www.guelman.ru/slava). The girl turns 16, guests come to the estate, the girl lies down on a shovel and goes into the oven... Previously, Sorokin wrote “on top” of Platonov and Turgenev, Babaevsky and Dostoevsky, now - “on top” of himself.
Year strings . Pages from Tatiana Tolstoy's novel "Kys", dedicated to Russian melancholy and mice in a cast iron pot.
Poet of the Year . Kirill Reshetnikov. The Debut Prize winner masterfully combines folklore stylizations, philological tradition and punk poetry. There are no books yet. Poems can be found at www.mitin.com.
Non-fiction of the year . "Records and extracts" by Mikhail Gasparov (UFO publishing house). The reverse side of impartial philology: a postmodern pearl scattering, reduced only by the personality of the author.
Publication of the Year . Diary of Mikhail Kuzmin for 1905, 1906, 1907, published by “Ivan Limbach”. The more you become convinced over the years of the dubiousness of the literary achievements of the “Silver Age,” the more you admire the intensity of personal relationships that reigned then. The diaries were carefully prepared for printing by N. Bogomolov and S. Shumikhin.
Critic of the Year . Lev Danilkin in the magazine "Afisha". Everything came together: the need for the figure of a critic-friend, a critic-reader, the style of a cheerful glossy magazine, the sudden emergence of philological equipment and a sense of modernity. After some of Danilkin’s reviews, I could not write about the same book: he was ahead of my thoughts. Youthful enthusiasm in the apology of the market and the boasting of the authors who liked it is also rather a plus. The critic needs courage.
Career of the Year . Alexander Gavrilov. Just a year ago, a modest columnist for Ex Libris, and now a member of the boards and committees of three prestigious awards and editor-in-chief of the Book Review, which has now become readable.
Brawler of the Year . Lev Pirogov. An online columnist who brought the shameless style of “guest books” into critical articles. Half of the literary Runet is now busy quarreling with Pirogov.
Tragedy of the year . The death of Mikhail Novikov, a literary columnist for Kommersant, a pioneer of “secular criticism”, in which Danilkin is now so successful.
Drama of the Year . Closing of the Volga magazine. Quiet drama: as if there was no publication. A thick magazine cannot survive without outside money. The subscriber might like to, but is not able to vote for them with a full ruble.
Book Series of the Year . "Our Brand" by the publishing house "Amphora". Having fed the inquisitive reader with high-quality Western fiction, St. Petersburg residents are now publishing elite Russian prose in commercial editions - by Andrei Levkin, Alexander Sekatsky, Pavel Krusanov, Viktor Lapitsky.
But the publishing house of the year in the field of modern literature is “Ad Marginem”. The search for new authors writing on modern topics at modern speeds has begun to bear fruit: after “On Their Own” by Bolmat and “Banana” by M. Ivanov, the publishing house will offer us “Low Aerobatics” by Bayan Shiryanov and the stories of Mikhail Elizarov.
Internet Event of the Year . Elite book store "Swedish Shop" on www.russ.ru. Exquisite assortment, detailed collections of links, quotes, clear annotations from Boris Kuzminsky.
Breakthrough of the Year . Movement of Moscow bookselling firms to the regions. As soon as, for example, two bookstores were built in Voronezh with free access to shelves and a weekly update of the assortment, it became clear: people everywhere want to buy high-quality books. With the current bookselling system, only the most widely circulated books reach Kazan - those that can be sold from a street stall.
Institution of the Year . Fair "Non-fiction #2". An attempt to build a Western-style book event: with a wide aisle between stands and a large number of high-quality accompanying events: conferences, round tables, awards, etc. It was a very informative get-together for its own people, but not for its readers: many visitors to the Central House of Artists did not understand that books were being sold at the event with such a mysterious name.
Problem of the year . "Emergency Reserve", a supplement to "UFO", is the only paper publication that diligently publishes humanitarian essays, often of the highest order. The quality of the texts is becoming higher, but there is no commercial success, circulation is falling. The magazine abandoned its last issue in 2000 and will begin the new millennium with a new concept and new design.
Kunshtyuk of the year . Poem by Andrei Voznesensky "ru.", published on the website www.ozon.ru. In the online novel “The Web” by Mary and Percy Shelley, this text was predicted two years ago: it is strange that Voznesensky delayed so long with a fashionable topic. However, in the responses of online observers, irony gave way to benevolence: it is worth respecting the poet, who so cheerfully, sincerely, unconsciously, inventively rejoices at everything new and progressive.
Hares of the year . Until December 23, there were no monuments to hares in Russia. On December 23, two opened at once. In St. Petersburg on Hare Island (to legitimize the toponym; idea of V. Savchuk) and in the village of Mikhailovsky, Pskov region (here a hare is immortalized that crossed the path of Pushkin, who had already set out for Senate; idea of A. Bitov).
