In January 2004, the mayor of the village of Yantarny (formerly Palmniken) signed Decree N 268 "On the selection and preliminary approval of a land plot for the construction of objects of resort and recreational purposes and tourism of Baltiyskaya Lazur LLC", according to which there were about 7 thousand Jews at the burial site shot by the Nazis in 1945, a resort and entertainment complex will be built.
According to Ilya Altman, vice-president of the Holocaust Center, in 1945, the last mass execution of Jews in the history of the Second World War took place in Palmniken. About 7,000 people were shot.
"Graves are located along the entire coast ," said Chief Rabbi of the Kaliningrad Region David Shvedik. " Victims of Nazism and prisoners of Soviet concentration camps are buried here. Graves are at every step. Therefore, the memorial was placed in a conditional place so that there was where to come to bow. "
The regional public fund "In Memory of Palmniken" and the Kaliningrad Jewish community found out that this territory was transferred to a commercial company that was going to erect entertainment facilities near the memorial.
Public organizations appealed to the Governor of the region Vladimir Yegorov with a request to cancel the decision.
