Like earlier Epiphany , Easter has prompted some politicians to voice their understanding of church tradition.
On the eve of the Feast of the Resurrection of Christ, Gennady Zyuganov called the Russian Orthodox Church "one of the main guarantors of national unity, a universally recognized defender of primordial folk shrines and centuries-old traditions, a custodian and preacher of the eternal values of spirituality and patriotism."
It is to Orthodoxy, the leader of the Communist Party believes, that "the Russian people owe many of their wonderful spiritual qualities: mercy and courage, patience and fortitude, gentleness and love": "The high religious and moral ideals of Christianity, which from generation to generation shaped and inspired our national identity, determined it conciliar, sovereign character.
In an interview with Interfax, the country's chief communist noted the increased role of Orthodoxy in the fight against the intensified "dark forces of world evil," by which G. Zyuganov means globalization and NATO expansion.
