On October 31, 2004, a protest action was held in St. Petersburg against the incitement of ethnic hatred. The action was dedicated to the memory of human rights activist Nikolai Girenko, who was killed in June 2004.
The rally was attended by foreign students from St. Petersburg, as well as representatives of the Yabloko, Union of Right Forces, and Workers' Democracy parties. The audience was addressed by: Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation S.Popov, deputies of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg M.Amosov, Yu.Gladkov, N.Evdokimova, as well as representatives of national diasporas and organizations. The deputies and public figures called on the authorities to "resist the wave of violence on national grounds", "severely use the articles of the current legislation" .
