Members of the Jamaat group in Ulyanovsk will appear in court

The prosecutor's office of the Ulyanovsk region has completed an investigation into the case of the radical Islamist organization Jamaat, which included more than 80 people. Several members of this group were detained in December 2003 . Eight of that group will now face trial. They were charged under more than 10 articles of the Criminal Code, including charges of murder and inciting ethnic hatred. It has not yet been possible to prove the involvement in the crimes of other members of the group.

According to senior assistant to the regional prosecutor Vasily Zima, Jamaat has been operating in the Ulyanovsk region since 2002. In one of the Ulyanovsk apartments, a kind of mosque was arranged, where sermons were delivered, divine services were held, classes were held, during which members of the community "cultivated hatred for the infidels." The organization was also engaged in the distribution of religious literature preaching "Wahhabism".

During the existence of the Jamaat in Ulyanovsk, more than 80 people were attracted to the organization, among whom were 14-year-old schoolchildren. Most of those involved in the organization are "former Orthodox."

The members of the group, according to the prosecutor's office, were engaged in robberies, kidnappings and contract killings.
