More than 40 tombstones at the Jewish Preobrazhenskoe cemetery in St. Petersburg were desecrated on December 16, 2004 with swastikas and offensive inscriptions ( "Kill the Jew", "All Jews - to the gas chamber", "SS", "88" ). This is not the first case of vandalism at a Jewish cemetery. Last fall, skinheads knocked down several tombstones and painted gravestones.
Jewish religious organizations issued a statement regarding the pogrom, in which they called on law enforcement agencies to take measures to identify the vandals and punish them to the fullest extent of the law.
