In Bashkiria they are trying to ban opposition protests

On April 25, 2005, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Bashkiria addressed the republican authorities with a “recommendation to minimize political activity in the region on May 1-9” - due to the threat of terrorist attacks planned by Chechen militants. Political activity means any rallies and demonstrations, writes Gazeta.Ru.

Bashkir oppositionists are confident that the ban is directed against a protest planned for May 1, 2005 demanding the resignation of the President of the Republic, Murtaza Rakhimov. The protesters were going to set up a tent camp and not remove it until Rakhimov resigns.

Even if the opposition succeeds in holding the rally, there will be nowhere to rally on May 1st. The city authorities are planning various cultural events in the central squares and streets of Ufa, and the Ufa branch of the Eurasian Youth Union is planning to hold a rally in support of President Rakhimov on May 1, in a place familiar to oppositionists.

On April 26, 2005, a group of human rights activists issued an appeal “Do not allow “Bloody Sunday” in Bashkiria!”, which warned about the reality of the bloody clash on May 1, 2005 between opponents of the current President Rakhimov and members of the Eurasian Youth Union, which, according to the authors of the text , can team up with riot police.
