Retrial of Pavel Lyuzakov

On July 7, 2005, a retrial began in the case of Pavel Lyuzakov, editor-in-chief of the Svobodnoe Slovo newspaper.

After the journalist was sentenced, Lyuzakov’s defense appealed to the Moscow City Court with a cassation appeal, where the verdict was overturned and the case was sent for a new trial. Lyuzakov's support group fears that the sentence may be harsher.

On July 28, 2005, at a hearing in the Ostankino court, witnesses for the prosecution and defense were questioned.

On August 10, 2005, the next court hearing took place in the case of Pavel Lyuzakov, before which an authorized picket in defense of the journalist took place near the building of the Ostankino District Court.

Judge Marina Frolova scheduled the continuation of the trial for August 15, 2005.

On August 16, 2005, the Ostankino Court of Moscow again found Pavel Lyuzakov guilty of illegal acquisition and possession of firearms and sentenced him to 2 years of imprisonment to be served in a penal colony.

Lyuzakova's lawyer stated that she intends to appeal the verdict.
