Governor of the Yaroslavl Region Anatoly Lisitsyn prepared an appeal to President Putin with a request to assist in the transfer to the Russian Orthodox Church of an architectural monument of federal significance - the Church of Elijah the Prophet. The decision to transfer the temple to the Russian Orthodox Church was made in June 2005 by the commission for interaction with religious associations under the regional administration. At the same time, the management of the museum-reserve, in whose use the church building is located, spoke out against him. Later, as the governor himself told Interfax , the experts of the commission of the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography and the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Culture of Russia recognized it as inappropriate to transfer the temple to the Russian Orthodox Church. However, A. Lisitsyn hopes that the president will help “restore historical justice.”
In a conversation with an agency correspondent, the governor “noted that the diocese is ready to fulfill all the conditions of the museum and the Ministry of Culture for the maintenance and operation of the temple in order to preserve this national heritage.” And Archbishop Kirill of Yaroslavl and Rostov said: “We are grateful to the museum staff who preserve all this property, but at the same time we must understand that they are here as guests, not at home.
