African student beaten in Nizhny Novgorod

At the end of January 2006, in Nizhny Novgorod, near a hostel for foreign students, a 26-year-old black student of the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering, a citizen of the Republic of Botswana, was attacked.

Three unknown people attacked the foreigner and started beating him. The beating was tried to stop by a passer-by who managed to drive away the attackers. However, then they again caught up with the victim at the porch of the hostel and continued beating. The same passer-by again stood up for the African - a fight ensued. Other students ran out of the building at the noise, after which the attackers disappeared. An ambulance and police were called. Both victims (a student and a passer-by) received medical assistance.

The affected student has already begun his studies. But, he tries not to show himself on the street at all.

The criminal case was initiated under Art. 161 ("robbery"), because in the course of a fight a hat was stolen from a passerby. Law enforcement officials do not rule out that after the circumstances of the attack are clarified, the article of the accusation can be reclassified to another one, taking into account the motive of national hatred.
