Yoshkar-Ola: Assorted xenophobia

On February 24, 2006, an article by Alexander Fridom was published on the website of the organization MariUver, dedicated to manifestations of xenophobia in the Republic of Mari El. The author paid considerable attention to xenophobic graffiti common on the streets of Yoshkar-Ola.

A. Freedom notes that xenophobic graffiti is present on almost all streets of the city. Thus from the analysis of the published photos it is possible to understand the following.

Firstly, the main authors of xenophobic drawings are members of the BS-12 group (probably White Power, one of the translations of the self-name slogan "White Power", popular in the skin environment - ed. ) . It was she who became the successor to the collapsed regional branch of the RNE. It was formed, apparently, recently, because. back in the summer of 2005 graffiti was anonymous. The author claims that many ex-members of the RNE joined this new group. However, it is possible that "BS" is a generic name for several skin groups, because. in the presence of this "signature" under the vast majority of graffiti, the symbolism that accompanies it is different: there is a "classical" Hitler four-beam swastika, there is a three-beam swastika, there are Celtic crosses. But the RNE-shny "Kolovrat" on the walls of houses, although it is found, it is quite obvious that it was applied a very long time ago and has not been updated since then.

Secondly, xenophobic slogans are extremely diverse and, although not original, do not concentrate on any one object of hatred, but, on the contrary, spread to the maximum possible objects.

These are the ethnocentric "Russia for the Russians", "Russian, get up" , and the anti-Semitic "Our enemy is Zionism", "Down with the Jewish plague" , and the anti-Caucasian ones - "Beat the Khachi", "Chocks out" (A. Frid connects the appearance of anti-Caucasian inscriptions with the appearance of relevant publications in the republican press), and the anti-Chinese "Slanting bastards out" . There are calls "in the style" of the DPNI ( "Say no to the occupiers", "Down with black immigrants" ), and the Liberal Democratic Party ( "A decent life for Russian people" (note that the slogan is accompanied by a swastika - ed. )), etc. and so on. Note also that some of the xenophobic inscriptions are painted over. However, it is not known who is doing this - the municipal services of the city or local public activists.

And, finally, attention is drawn to the increased concentration of such "arts" near the universities of the city. Anti-Semitic inscriptions, as noted by A. Fried, are common not only near the Jewish center, but also on buildings belonging to the Mari State University (one of the educational buildings and two dormitory buildings), anti-Caucasian ones - near the Mari State Pedagogical Institute and the Mari State Technical University (with swastikas almost all the buildings of the dormitories of these universities are painted). It was near these dormitories that already in 2006 several skinhead attacks on nonresident students were noted.
