Public Chamber in action

At the meeting of the Commission of the Public Chamber on Tolerance and Freedom of Conscience, chaired by V. Tishkov, held on March 6, 2006, it was announced that the Commission intends to submit its proposals and amendments to the new Concept of the state national policy (see the text of the Concept proposed by the Ministry of Regional Development, according to as of the end of 2005).

Among other shortcomings of the concept, the commission singled out the fact that "there is almost nothing in it about countering extremism and terrorism . " To work on the amendments, a working group was set up chaired by Kamilzhan Kalandarov, head of the Al-Haq All-Russian Public Organization, and Alexander Ignatenko, president of the Institute of Religion and Politics. They were given three weeks to develop the amendments.

At the same time, a decision was made at the meeting to establish a Public Committee for Combating Xenophobia and Extremism, chaired by a member of the Public Chamber, writer Dmitry Lipskerov. According to V. Tishkov, this committee should include people who have authority among various youth movements, for example, among football fans. As one of the possible members of the committee, he named the name of Valery Gazzaev (compare with the attempt to "tame" football fans made by the Moscow authorities).
