On March 20, 2006, in the Dagestan village of Kumtorkala, an unsanctioned rally of citizens protested against the unfair, in their opinion, distribution of land plots.
The protesters tried to seize the building of the district administration, but met with resistance from police and security officers. As a result of the ensuing brawl, several people were injured and wounded. To contain the crowd, the policemen were forced to use weapons.
The police department stressed that the shots were fired into the air. However, Abdulmajid Temirkhanov, head physician of the district hospital, said that one of the protesters received a gunshot wound to the chest.
A total of 20 people were injured.
The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Dagestan Adelgerey Magomedtagirov arrived at the scene. Units of OMON were sent to the village.
