Conference "Hate speech from the street to cyberspace: Examples and policies in different contexts", Budapest, March 31 - April 1, 2006

On March 31 - April 1, 2006, the international conference "Hate Speech from the Street to Cyberspace: Examples and Policies in Different Contexts" was held in Budapest, organized by the Central European University.

At the conference, the problems of the correlation of democratic freedoms (primarily freedom of speech) and restrictions on hate propaganda in the global media space were considered, the problems of countering hate speech and measures of its admissibility in public life and politics were discussed.

The topics of the presented reports reflect the names of the sections that worked at the conference:

1. "Hate speech in specific contexts" (for example, intolerant rhetoric in the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict, a cartoon scandal and the freedom of creativity of a cartoonist, etc.)

2. Anti-Romani Hate Speech in Central and Eastern Europe

3. Ways to Counter Hate Speech in Cyberspace

4. Alternative actions against hate speech - instead of bans

5. Is a universal policy to counter hate speech necessary and possible?

6. Hate speech on the air and online space
