Nationalist rally dispersed in Syktyvkar

On April 9, 2006, a traditional unsanctioned rally of local nationalists was dispersed in Syktyvkar. Police officers beat Yury Yekishev, leader of the Union of National Revival, detained several dozen demonstrators, and confiscated flags and issues of the "Stenogram" newspaper.

The rally participants put up resistance, as a result of which many were injured. In addition, passers-by were beaten, as police officers beat all men under 30 years of age without explanation.

The detainees were put into special vehicles and sent to the police station. After an hour and a half, they were released with apologies, the confiscated flags and newspapers were returned. According to the website that reported the incident, the police acted on direct orders from the Syktyvkar administration.

It is reported that all the victims intend to apply to the prosecutor's office.
