Youth fights in Elista

On March 30 and April 2, 2006, major fights between youth groups took place in Elista, which, according to some estimates, were inter-ethnic in nature. According to police major, head of the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Eduard Khaiko, such clashes occur regularly in Kalmykia in the Druzhba park and in the southern region of Elista.

March 30, 2006 in the North-Western region there was a fight between youth groups. As a result of the fight, a 25-year-old local resident was killed, he died in the hospital. The second victim, taken to the hospital, survived. Despite the fact that, according to some reports, groups of Kalmyk and Russian youth fought, E. Khaiko said that the conflict still had nothing to do with ethnic hatred. Criminal cases initiated: under part 4 of article 111. of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“infliction of grievous bodily harm, negligently resulting in the death of the victim”) and under Art. 213 ("hooliganism"). As part of the operational-search activities, two natives of Elista, 17-18 years old, were detained.

On April 2, 2006, young people took part in the clash, belligerent after the funeral of a resident of Elista who died in a fight on March 30. The victims were avoided.

Unfortunately, due to the information secrecy of the region, the details of the incidents could not be clarified. However, they are being actively discussed at the Elista forums, which in general boils down to the following. Mass youth fights are indeed not uncommon in the Kalmyk capital. However, they are, as a rule, not ethnic but "territorial" in nature: groups of newly arrived rural youth fight with townspeople.

In recent incidents, ethnically Russian young people turned out to be "citizens", and it was these incidents, for some reason, that were covered by the media. As for the fight on March 30, 2006, people presenting themselves as participants in the fight on Kalmyk forums claim that it had no ethnic overtones: all the participants were just drunk.
