The court declared the arrest of Viktor Shmakov illegal

On May 16, 2006, the Supreme Court of Bashkiria declared the arrest , editor of the opposition newspaper Provincial Vesti, of Viktor Shmakov illegal .

According to V. Shmakov's lawyer, Ilgiz Galimkhanov, the court ruled illegal the decision made on April 29, 2006 by the Kirovsky District Court of Ufa to impose a preventive measure in the form of detention on him and ruled to release the defendant on bail.
