In Saratov, an explosion of the city synagogue was prevented. This was announced on July 18, 2006 at a press conference by the head of the Federal Security Service of Russia in the Saratov region Valery Beklenishchev.
"In the course of operational developments, the Chekists became aware of a 22-year-old leader of one of the local underground pro-fascist organizations who intended to blow up a synagogue ," V. Beklenishchev said. The attacker was going to make an incendiary-type explosive device and was looking for people who were ready to help him carry out the attack. In the course of preparatory actions, FSB operatives approached the skinhead, who "explained to the young man the possible consequences of the crime and persuaded him to abandon what he had planned ," said the head of the FSB department of the Saratov region.
As a result, the young man turned himself in to the regional department of the FSB. He did not hide his commitment to nationalist ideas, but refused to carry out the terrorist act.
"According to the law, no criminal case was initiated in connection with the surrender, and the young man escaped his first conviction ," the head of the FSB added.
