Surgut Orthodox have collected over 2,000 signatures against the construction of a Catholic cathedral in the city, NewsProm.Ru reports with reference to SIA-Press. The decision on the allocation of land by the administration has not yet been made, although in early August the issue was discussed at public hearings.
Rector of the Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Fr. Peter has already stated that the appearance of a Catholic cathedral in Surgut could lead to spiritual disunity. Meanwhile, according to the clergyman of the local Roman Catholic parish, Fr. Yaroslav Mitzhak, about a thousand Catholics live in the city, who need their own church.
