Izhevsk City Council deputy detained on charges of inciting national hatred

On November 30, 2006, right-wing activists reported the arrest of Vasily Kryukov, deputy head of the Udmurt regional organization of the Narodnaya Volya party, Izhevsk (Udmurtia) City Council deputy, accused under Art. 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (incitement of national hatred). Later it turned out that he was not arrested, but only detained for resisting the police, in connection with which a case was initiated against him under Art. 318 (use of violence against a representative of authority).

On that day, Udmurt police officers attempted to search the office of the Izhevsky Zavod UROO in connection with a case of distribution of nationalist materials, and Kroyukov tried to resist.

Together with Kryukov, there were several other people in the office, mostly members of the Narodnaya Volya party, including those who were detained for a drunken brawl in August 2006, together with Kryukov, the head of the local branch of the party, Mikhail Trapeznikov (who, we recall, has a conviction for inciting national hatred ) and an assistant to the deputy, Marina Kalinina, who had neo-Nazi leaflets found in the summer.

From the message of the Secretary of the Political Council of the Narodnaya Volya party, Sergei Stebanov, it turned out that in early November (on the eve of the Russian March), Kalinina was again detained with nationalist leaflets.

Local media suggest that the decision to urgently conduct a search was made in connection with information circulating in the city that neo-fascist Izhevsk groups were preparing a provocation against the organizers of a social protest action of many thousands. Kryukov himself - a native of right-wing radical football fans, did not lose his right-wing connections and M. Trapeznikov. This gave grounds to law enforcers to assume that the “Narodovites” are able to organize activists from the “Pack”, “Others”, RNE groups so that they provoke a fight at the upcoming rally. The reason for which, probably, was to be the desire of "Narodnaya Volya" and the Communist Party of the Russian Federation to hold a rally at the same place and at the same time (the corresponding application was submitted to the mayor's office).
