Statistics on the Russian Orthodox Church for 2006
Speaking on December 5 at the annual diocesan meeting in Moscow, Patriarch Alexy II, as usual, cited statistical data concerning the Russian Orthodox Church in general and the Moscow diocese in particular. We quote the message of the Patriarchy.ru website :
“According to the data given in the speech of His Holiness the Patriarch, there are currently 131 eparchies in the Russian Orthodox Church. Today there are 169 bishops, of which 131 are diocesan, 38 vicarious and 13 are retired.
There are 713 monasteries, including:
∙ in Russia - 216 male and 237 female cloisters;
∙ in Ukraine - 87 men and 81 women;
∙ in other CIS countries - 34 men and 53 women;
∙ in foreign countries - 2 male and 3 female.
The patriarchal jurisdiction is 25 stavropegic monasteries, including 4 men's and 4 women's monasteries in Moscow, which have 16 monastic farmsteads (with 64 churches). There are 7 representative metochions of the Local Orthodox Churches with 9 churches.
Currently, there are 7 cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin, 2 cathedrals, 5 churches at Synodal institutions, 298 parish churches, 118 Patriarchal farmsteads, 64 monastic farmsteads, 68 monastery churches, 9 baptismal churches and 69 chapels in the capital.
His Holiness Patriarch Alexy noted that services have not been resumed in 17 churches in the capital. 33 temples have not been liberated by the former tenants. 90 temples and chapels are under construction.
The Moscow clergy number 1,117, of which 820 priests and 297 deacons serve in the parishes of the capital. The monastic clergy serve in the monasteries - 400 priests and 185 deacons, a total of 585 clergy.
The total number of clergy in Moscow is 1,273 priests and 510 deacons, totaling 1,783 clergy, including 17 clergy who are on business trips abroad.
As of the end of 2006, the Russian Orthodox Church has 5 Theological Academies, 2 Orthodox Universities, 37 Theological Seminaries, 38 Theological Schools, and one diocese has pastoral courses.
Several academies and seminaries have opened icon-painting and regency schools. The preparation of candidates for the priesthood and other church workers for Moscow is carried out by the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary, the Sretenskaya, Perervinskaya and Nikolo-Ugreshskaya Seminaries, as well as the Orthodox St. Tikhon Humanitarian University.
