On the evening of February 28, 2007, a 28-year-old employee of Rosevrobank, a native of Buryatia, Nikolai Prokopyev, was killed in Moscow. His body with 26 stab wounds was found near his home in the Perovo district.
Several eyewitnesses testified that N. Prokopyev was being chased by young men of skinhead appearance. Witnesses later retracted this testimony. None of the victim's personal belongings were stolen except his mobile phone.
A criminal case has been opened. The Perovskaya Interdistrict Prosecutor's Office, which is investigating the murder, is considering all versions of what happened, but the version of robbery is considered priority: “It is assumed that Prokopyev resisted the attackers and then they inflicted multiple wounds on the victim.” Investigators consider the version of a crime motivated by national hatred to be unlikely.
